Kanye West Dw Paris Fashion Week Debut S/S 2012

Kanye West Dw Paris Fashion Week Debut - Spring Summer 2012

Kanye West's debut collection was met with a resounding rejection from the critics. I'm not surprised. You shouldn't be either. Knee jerky much? Let's review. First impressions... This is the polar opposite of man repelling. This is attractive. This is "men want to be with her, women want to be her". Models the likes of Chanel Iman, Jourdan Dunn and Abbey Lee walked for the freshman collection.

Kanye's collection was no doubt "informed" by some of his favorites, his unabashed love for Phoebe Philo, his crush on Balmain. I didn't feel like there was anything ground breaking but I did feel that the looks were inspired but not re imagined, or regurgitated (think Victoria Beckham's first collection and Roland Mouret but less copy catty). Solid. You could definitely get a sense that the collection was realized by someone with a different point of view. Hooray for a diverse perspective.

Celine but decidedly sexier.
Alexander Wang but more authentically cool.
Balmain but less trashy.
Givenchy but more accessible (Tisci is his homeboy)

If you sent this show down the runway in anyone else's name it would not have been slammed by critics. The fabric choices were good. The pieces appeared well made, execution was a bit heavy handed but not novice. As far as the tailoring critiques, with regard to the clothes not fitting I think that might have been a nod to a culture that escaped some of the editors. Fitty - Fitty is like Matchy-Matchy. The shoes, Zanotti - Bravo. Seasonality? Leather year round, fur in the spring, Chicago yes.

I'd wear most of it with the exception of the looks that were "sans pants". When is the last time you could say that?  Just don't forget to pack some extra boob tape in your fur backpack.
